…How To Adjust Your HDTV To Professional ISF Standards
Rick invests several thousand dollars to purchase a home theater system of his dreams. Understandably he expects his system to offer the most accurate and brilliant video and sound quality imaginable. And so far he’s pleased.
That is until he visits his friend Jason, who recently purchased a similar system with the same make and model and size video screen.
Rick’s blown away by how much sharper and clearer the picture quality is and how much better his friend’s system sounds. Rick realizes that there is something vitally wrong with his system.
The answer lies with professional video calibration. Jason’s installer included calibration, Rick’s installer did not.
THE LIMITATIONS OF FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS
Why the need for professional video calibration in the first place? The problem is that the video screen manufacturers calibrate their screen for display on the showroom floor, not the end user’s home. Market research tells these manufacturers’ that what sells televisions in side by side comparisons is high contrast and bright and vivid color. But the lighting on a retail showroom floor is completely different than the lighting in a home or theater.
So these TVs with the factory default settings are “overdriven” with excessive brightness and other settings that diminish the TV’s useable life and can cause eye fatigue and migraines for the end-user until they are properly calibrated.
The same goes for audio. Big box audio video stores cannot show you what good audio sounds like, it can only be heard. Today’s receivers usually have basic calibration tools built inside but only the better installers or tech savvy end user fully understand how to use these tools. If you’ve purchased your system from a big box store or via the internet, there won’t be anyone to tell you how to do a proper setup. However, to experience a movie or television show the way the director intended you have to have a calibrated system that matches your room’s audio characteristics and your speaker’s capabilities.
