Looking to set up a home theater system in a dorm room or small room in your family home? Despite the space constraints, you can set up a home theater just about anywhere. Make a list of the components you already have and what you need to buy.
* What devices are included
Many companies (ours included), offer home theater packages that include everything you need, including the flat panel or projector. If you already have some of the components, such as a DVD player, getting an all-in-one package is probably not cost effective and you might want to find a la carte items. But if you are starting from scratch, a home theater in a box can be convenient and relatively inexpensive. Our suggestion is to use separate equipment in case of product failure you’d still have some form of entertainment. Make sure all the components you’re looking for – such as a tuner, CD player, and DVD/Blu-ray player – are included. Make sure your system can play all the discs and file types you plan to use (DVD, mp3, AVI, etc.).
* Number of Speakers
For small rooms or dorm rooms five to six speakers should be suitable. This is enough to effectively create decent surround sound to heighten your movie viewing experience. Inwall or ceiling speakers take up less space than floor standing or bookshelf speakers, and when combined with a wall mounted flat panel create a sexy and contemporary look.
* Wattage
Generally speaking, more wattage equals more power. If you want to be totally submerged in overwhelming sound look for 500 watt systems. If you want quality sound that doesn’t make your ears bleed, 100 watt and larger systems are ideal. Remember it’s a small room, so a little sound goes a long way!
Hiding the source equipment in a closet or other underutilized space also yields significant floor space and gives the installation a much cleaner and professional look. A media server or a disc changer is an ideal add-on for these type of installations.
